VirtualBox는 Sun Microsystems사에서 무료로 제공되는 가상화 프로그램입니다

제작사인 Innotek사가 Sun Microsystems로 인수 되면서 Sun Microsystems에서 오픈소스로 제공하는 프로그램입니다.

대표적인 상용 가상머신 소프트웨어 VMWare와 비슷한 기능을 제공하는 프로그램으로 제작사인 Innotek사가 Sun Microsystems로 인수 되면서 Sun Microsystems에서 오픈소스로 제공하는 누구나 사용이 가능한 프로그램입니다.

프로그램은 VMWare와 거의 비슷한 인터페이스를 보여주며 기존 VMWare 사용자들이라면 무리 없이 사용이 가능합니다. 특히, 완벽하진 않지만 한글 지원과 VMware Virtual Machine Disk Format(VMDK)의 이미지 파일은 읽고 쓸 수 있으며, Microsoft Virtual PC의 디스크 이미지를 변환하는 유틸리티를 포함하고 있어 VMware의 디스크 이미지를 이용하여 VirtualBox의 게스트 운영체제를 설치할 수 있습니다.

2007년 DesktopLinux.com의 조사에 따르면, 버추얼박스는 리눅스 데스크톱 위에 윈도 프로그램을 실행시키는 가장 인기있는 소프트웨어 패키지로 3위에 등재되었다고 합니다.
